
2009 Bundestag elections: 62.2 million persons entitled to vote
WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Returning Officer, about 62.2 million Germans living in the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany will be entitled to vote in the elections to the 17th German Bundestag on 27 September 2009, according to an estimate of the Federal Statistical Office. A total of 32.2 million of the persons entitled to vote are women and 30.0 million are men. Hence the number of persons entitled to vote will be slightly higher than during the 2005 Bundestag elections when it amounted to about 61.9 million.
The persons entitled to vote comprise about 3.5 million first-time voters who will have become legally an adult since the previous Bundestag elections. Of this total, 1.7 million women and 1.8 million men will have completed 18 years of age until the day of election and thus will for the first time be entitled to vote in elections to the Bundestag. First-time voters will be all young Germans who were born between 19 September 1987 and 27 September 1991.
