WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Returning Officer, 3,556 candidates (in 2005: 3,648) have listed for the election to the 17th German Bundestag on 27 September 2009. Out of them, 851 stand as candidates only in a constituency and 1,361 have listed only on a Land list, while 1,344 have listed as candidates both in a constituency and on a Land list.

The 200 Land lists of the 27 parties (2005: 177 Land lists of 25 parties) admitted in the Länder to participate with Land lists in the 2009 Bundestag election include a total of 2,705 (in 2005: 2,906) candidates, 845 (in 2005: 936) of whom are women.

The numbers of Land list candidates (in brackets the numbers for 2005) are as follows:

SPD: 438 (479) including 163 (209) women
CDU: 397 (465) including 141 (149) women
FDP: 346 (369) including 78 (79) women
DIE LINKE: 227 (302) including 104 (134) women
GRÜNE: 198 (238) including 98 (106) women
CSU: 63 (59) including 20 (20) women
Others: 1,036 (994) including 241 (264) women

Constituency candidates of the SPD, of the CDU and CSU and of the FDP have listed in all 299 constituencies. As regards the DIE LINKE and the GRÜNE, 297 and 296 constituency nominations, respectively, have been admitted.

The total number of candidates for direct election nominated at the constituency level, taking account of all parties, political associations and individual candidates, amounts to 2,195 (in 2005: 2,062), including 522 (in 2005: 442) women. The average number of candidates per constituency thus is 7.3.

The average age of the 3,556 candidates is 47.4 years (in 2005: 46.0 years). The average age of candidates is lowest in the Piratenpartei Deutschland (PIRATEN) (32.3 years) and highest in the Allianz der Mitte (ADM) (67.8 years). The youngest candidate in the 2009 Bundestag election is born in 1991 and stands for election for DIE REPUBLIKANER (REP). The oldest candidate is born in 1920 and stands for election for BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN.

Deutschen Bundestag 2009” (The candidates for the election to the 17th German Bundestag 2009”), which has now been released in the series of publications of the Federal Returning Officer. The special issue contains, among other things, a list of the names of all candidates and summaries such as on the share of women and on the age and the groups of occupations of the candidates.
