1,196 candidates on the lists for the 2009 European Election
WIESBADEN – As reported today by the Federal Returning Officer at a press conference in Berlin, a total of 1,196 candidates will stand for the 99 seats in the European Parliament to be allocated by the Federal Republic of Germany at the 2009 European Election, among them there are 352 women.
The Federal Returning Officer appealed to all citizens to participate in the European election on 7 June 2009 and cast their votes. In his appeal, the Federal Returning Officer emphasized that the European election is of special importance as it permits citizens to influence political decision-making within the EU.
The election will be based on the principle of proportional representation, meaning that the number of seats to be distributed in Germany will depend only on the shares of votes cast for the lists of parties and other political associations. As in Bundestag elections, the five per cent restrictive clause will apply. Altogether, 32 parties and political associations will run in the 2009 European election with combined lists for all Länder or with lists for individual Länder. The ballot papers will contain 31 nominations for each Land.
Extensive and detailed information on the nominations admitted and the candidates and substitute candidates standing for election may be found in the special issue “Die Wahlbewerber für die Wahl zum Europäischen Parlament aus der Bundesrepublik Deutschland 2009“, which has just been issued in German as a publication of the Federal Returning Officer. Among others, the special issue contains a list of the names of all candidates and of the substitute candidates, and summary tables for instance on the share of women, on the age of the candidates and the occupational groups to which they belong.
The special issue may be downloaded as a free pdf file from the website of the Federal Returning Officer.
It may also be ordered at a price of EUR 18.– from the booksellers or directly from our distribution partner:
