Final result of the 2009 European Election

WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Returning Officer, at its meeting on 30 June 2009, the Federal Electoral Committee determined the final result of the 2009 European Election for the Federal Republic of Germany.

With a voter participation of 43.3 percent (2004: 43.0 percent), the parties obtained the following shares in the total number of votes cast:

      -     CDU                                                   30.7   percent      (2004:     36.5   percent)

      -     SPD                                                   20.8   percent      (2004:     21.5   percent)

      -     GRÜNE                                             12.1   percent      (2004:     11.9   percent)

      -     FDP                                                    11.0   percent      (2004:        6.1   percent)

      -     DIE LINKE                                          7.5   percent      (2004:        6.1   percent)

      -     CSU                                                      7.2   percent      (2004:        8.0   percent)

      -     other lists of candidates         10.8   percent      (2004:        9.8   percent)

In this year’s European Election, the share of invalid votes was 2.2 percent (2004: 2.8 percent).

The various parties and other political organisations of the other lists of candidates obtained the following shares in votes cast (arranged by number of votes obtained):

      -     FW FREIE WÄHLER                          1.7   percent      (2004: did not participate)

      -     REP                                                       1.3   percent      (2004:        1.9   percent)

      -     Die Tierschutzpartei                    1.1   percent      (2004:        1.3   percent)

      -     FAMILIE                                              1.0   percent      (2004:        1.0   percent)

      -     PIRATEN                                             0.9   percent      (2004: did not participate)

      -     RENTNER                                           0.8   percent      (2004: did not participate)

      -     ödp                                                       0.5   percent      (2004:        0.6   percent)

      -     DVU                                                      0.4   percent      (2004: did not participate)

      -     RRP                                                       0.4   percent      (2004: did not participate)

      -     DIE FRAUEN                                      0.3   percent      (2004:        0.6   percent)

      -     PBC                                                      0.3   percent      (2004:        0.4   percent)

      -     Volksabstimmung                        0.3   percent      (2004:        0.5   percent)

      -     50Plus                                                0.3   percent      (2004: did not participate)

Of the total of 736 seats in the European Parliament, the Federal Republic of Germany accounts for 99 seats. According to the official final result, those seats have been distributed among the parties as follows:

      -     CDU                                                       34   seats          (2004:         40   seats)

      -     SPD                                                       23   seats          (2004:         23   seats)

      -     GRÜNE                                                 14   seats          (2004:         13   seats)

      -     FDP                                                        12   seats          (2004:            7   seats)

      -     DIE LINKE                                              8   seats          (2004:            7   seats)

      -     CSU                                                          8   seats          (2004:            9   seats)

Hence no changes occurred when compared with the official provisional result of the 2009 European Election.

The final results of the 2009 European Election for the Federation, the 16 Länder and the 413 towns not attached to an administrative district and administrative districts are available on the website of the Federal Returning Officer.
