The term of office begins after the elected candidate has attained membership of the German Bundestag or the European Parliament and expires at the end of the electoral term. An elected candidate shall attain membership of the German Bundestag or the European Parliament, after the election result for the electoral territory has finally been established by the Federal Electoral Committee, with the opening of the first sitting of the German Bundestag or the European Parliament following elections.
