The President of the Federal Statistical Office Roderich Egeler was appointed Federal Returning Officer with effect from 1 August 2008. He follows the former Federal Returning Officer Walter Radermacher who left office at the end of July 2008 after a term of two years as he was appointed Director-General of Eurostat.
The tasks of the Federal Returning Officer are by tradition entrusted to the President of the Federal Statistical Office. As an independent electoral body, the Federal Returning Officer is responsible for preparing and conducting Bundestag elections and European elections.
Brief curriculum vitae
Mr. Egeler was born in Obernkirchen in the Grafschaft Schaumburg - Lippe district on 7 May 1950.
Between 1972 and 1978, he studied economics at the Universities of Bonn and Cologne.
Until 1992, he was Assistant Head of Section, Head of Section and Head of Division in the Federal Civil Defence Agency, the focus of his work being disaster control and the budget. In 1991/1993, he was appointed Desk Officer in the Budget Division of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Since May 1993 he has been in charge of the Procurement Agency of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. In the last few years, the focus of work has been on the reorganisation of purchasing processes and the introduction of electronic purchasing.
