Information for Union citizens

Citizens of other European Union member states (Union citizens) who live in the Federal Republic of Germany can also take part in the elections to the European Parliament, either in the Federal Republic of Germany or in their country of origin.

Legal basis

Article 22 (2) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union

Please note that the right to vote may be exercised only once and only personally.

Germans in United Kingdom

As things stand, the United Kingdom will not be part of the European Union by the time the European Parliament Elections are held. From that day, German citizens who are resident in the United Kingdom will not live in a EU Member State anymore but in a third country. As a consequence, they will be able to elect only candidates from the Federal Republic of Germany in the 2019 European Parliament election.
