4,451 candidates for the 2013 Bundestag Election

WIESBADEN – A total of 4,451 candidates, including 1,149 women (25.8 %), have listed for the Bundestag election on 22 September 2013. This was reported by the Federal Returning Officer, Roderich Egeler, at a press conference held in Berlin today on the 2013 Bundestag Election. In the last election in September 2009, there were just 3,556 candidates.

In the coming election, 1,005 people stand as candidates only in a constituency and 1,746 have listed only on a Land list, while 1,700 have listed as candidates both in a constituency and on a Land list.

The 233 Land lists of the 30 parties (2009: 200 Land lists of 27 parties) admitted in the Länder to participate with Land lists in the 2013 Bundestag Election include a total of 3,446 (in 2009: 2,705) candidates, 1,027 or 29.8 % (in 2009: 845 or 31.2 %) of whom are women.

Constituency candidates of the CDU and CSU, SPD and GRÜNE have listed in all 299 constituencies. As regards the FDP and DIE LINKE, 298 constituency nominations each have been admitted.

The total number of candidates for direct election nominated at the constituency level, taking account of all parties, political associations and individual candidates, amounts to 2,705 (in 2009: 2,195), including 607 or 22.4 % (in 2009: 522 or 23.8 %) women. The average number of candidates per constituency is 9.

The youngest candidate in the 2013 Bundestag Election is born in 1995 and stands for election on a Land list in Bayern, while the oldest candidate is born in 1923 and has listed on a Land list in Berlin. The average age of the 4,451 candidates is 47.4 years as was the case in the 2009 Bundestag Election. Not considering parties which have been admitted with just one candidate for direct election each, the average age of candidates is lowest in the Partei DIE RECHTE (25.8 years) and highest in the party Ab jetzt…Demokratie durch Volksabstimmung (Volksabstimmung) (69.3 years).
