48 parties may participate in the 2017 Bundestag Election

WIESBADEN – At its meeting of 6 and 7 July 2017 in Berlin, the Federal Electoral Committee ascertained in a binding form for all electoral bodies that the following 8 parties have continuously been represented in the German Bundestag or in a Landtag since the latest relevant election by at least five members based on their own nomination of candidates (Section 18 (4) number 1 of the Federal Elections Act) and therefore are not required to provide supporting signatures when submitting their lists of candidates for the 2017 Bundestag Election on 24 September 2017:

Parties represented in the 18th German Bundestag:

  1. Christlich Demokratische Union Deutschlands (CDU)
  2. Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD)
  3. DIE LINKE (DIE LINKE)
  4. BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN (GRÜNE)
  5. Christlich-Soziale Union in Bayern e.V. (CSU)

In addition, parties represented in at least one Landtag:

  1. Freie Demokratische Partei (FDP)
  2. Alternative für Deutschland (AfD)
  3. FREIE WÄHLER (FREIE WÄHLER)

The Federal Electoral Committee has recognised as parties the following 40 associations for the election to the 19th German Bundestag (listed chronologically by receipt of their notification of intended participation; shortened forms in brackets):

As regards the party FREIE WÄHLER (FREIE WÄHLER), which had also submitted its notice of participation, it had been ascertained that this party has been represented by 19 members in the Bayerischer Landtag since the latest election (see above).

Those parties recognised by the Federal Electoral Committee for the 2017 Bundestag Election have to collect supporting signatures for their lists of candidates. Signatures of a minimum of 200 persons entitled to vote in a specific constituency are required for a constituency nomination, while the signatures of at least one of each 1,000 persons of a given Land, who were entitled to vote during the latest Bundestag election, but of not more than 2,000 persons are required for placing a proposal for a candidate in the Land list.

At the constituency and the Land levels, the lists of candidates will have to be received by the competent constituency returning officers and Land returning officers, respectively, by 17 July 2017 at 6 p.m. at the latest. Their admission will be decided upon by Constituency Electoral Committees and Land Electoral Committees, respectively, on 28 July 2017.
