53 parties can participate in the 2021 Bundestag Election

WIESBADEN – 53 parties can participate in the Bundestag election on 26 September 2021. This was the result of the meeting of the Federal Electoral Committee held in Berlin on 8 and 9 July 2021. The Federal Electoral Committee checked whether parties meet the formal requirements for taking part in the Bundestag election. Federal Returning Officer Dr. Georg Thiel said: “I wish to emphasize that despite the difficult framework conditions in the time of the pandemic, many associations underwent stage one of the process to be able to participate in the Bundestag election. For this I would like to thank all of them.” In the last Bundestag election on 24 September 2017, 48 parties were informed that they could participate in the election according to the Federal Electoral Committee’s findings. In the end, only 42 parties took part in that election with candidates of their own.

All other parties recognised by the Federal Electoral Committee for the purpose of the 2021 Bundestag Election have to collect supporting signatures for their candidates.

As reported on 10 June 2021, the number of supporting signatures required for Land lists and constituency nominations was reduced to one quarter in each case for the 2021 Bundestag Election because of the restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At constituency and Land level, lists of candidates will have to be received by the respective constituency or Land returning officers by 6 p.m. on 19 July 2021. Constituency Electoral Committees and Land Electoral Committees will decide on their admission on 30 July 2021.
