Background information for the 2021 Bundestag Election: Germans living abroad should apply for entry in the voters’ register now

WIESBADEN – Germans living abroad who do not have a registered domicile in Germany must be entered in a voters’ register to participate in the Bundestag election of 26 September 2021. To this end, they have to file a written application. By 5 September 2021 at the latest, the application must have been received by the municipality where that person last had a registered main residence before moving abroad.

Mail delivery may take longer than usual due to the pandemic. Especially Germans living in non-European countries should therefore post their application for entry into the voters register now, if possible. This ensures that the application will be delivered in time to the respective municipal authority by mid-August and that the voter will receive the postal voting documents early enough. Using the official courier service may be faster than postal delivery. For detailed information and a chart listing the countries from which the official courier service can be used please refer to the website of the Federal Returning Officer.

A small time frame of only six weeks will be available for sending and returning the documents. The completed postal voting documents must have been returned to the authority indicated on the official return envelope on election day, 26 September 2021, by the end of voting hours (6 p.m.). Ballot letters received later will not be considered in the counting of votes.

More information on the subject is provided in press release no. 12/21 of 30 June 2021.
