2021 Bundestag Election: go to the polls on 26 September!

WIESBADEN – The 20th German Bundestag will be elected next Sunday, 26 September 2021. Polling stations will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“Elections are the basis of our democracy. A high voter turnout is essential for the democratic legitimation of the new German Bundestag. I therefore call on all eligible voters to strengthen our democracy and cast their votes in this year’s Bundestag election,” says Federal Returning Officer Georg Thiel. “By participating in the election you take your most important chance to influence the way in which the Federal Republic of Germany will develop in the years to come. When you cast your vote, you exercise a fundamental democratic right.“

People who are entitled to vote but have misplaced or lost their voter's notification may nevertheless cast their vote in the Bundestag election. Voters can contact their local authority to find out at which polling station they can vote. At the request of the electoral board, people entitled to vote have to present their identity card or passport at the polling station.

Voters who are unable to go to the polls may still apply for a polling card and postal voting documents until Friday, 24 September 2021 at 6 p.m. In exceptional cases (e.g. provable sudden illness) this can be done until election day, 26 September 2021, 3 p.m. Voters who deliver their application at the electoral office will be given the postal voting documents immediately and may cast their votes there and then.
