Official provisional result

WIESBADEN/BERLIN – On 26 May 2014 at 2:40 a.m. the Federal Returning Officer released the official provisional result of the eighth direct election of the 96 members of the European Parliament from the Federal Republic of Germany, which was held on 25 May 2014.

With a voter turnout of 48.1 % (2009: 43.3 %), the parties and political associations obtained the following shares of valid votes:

CDU 30.0 % (2009: 30.7 %) 
SPD 27.3 % (2009: 20.8 %)
GRÜNE 10.7 % (2009: 12.1 %)
FDP 3.4 % (2009: 11.0 %)
DIE LINKE 7.4 % (2009: 7.5 %)
CSU 5.3 % (2009: 7.2 %)
FREIE WÄHLER 1.5 % (2009: 1.7 %)
REP 0.4 % (2009: 1.3 %)
Tierschutzpartei 1.2 % (2009: 1.1 %)
FAMILIE 0.7 % (2009: 1.0 %)
PIRATEN 1.4 % (2009: 0.9 %)
ÖDP 0.6 % (2009: 0.5 %)
PBC 0.2 % (2009: 0.3 %)
Volksabstimmung 0.3 % (2009: 0.3 %)
BP 0.2 % (2009: 0.2 %)

The share of invalid votes was 1.7 % (2009: 2.2 %) in the 2014 European Election.

Of the total of 751 seats in the European Parliament, the Federal Republic of Germany accounts for 96 seats. According to the official provisional result, the seats in the 8th European Parliament have been distributed among the parties and other political associations as follows:

CDU 29 seats (2009: 34 seats)
SPD 27 seats (2009: 23 seats)
GRÜNE 11 seats (2009: 14 seats)
FDP 3 seats (2009: 12 seats)
DIE LINKE 7 seats (2009: 8 seats)
CSU 5 seats (2009: 8 seats)
FREIE WÄHLER 1 seat (2009: no seat)
Tierschutzpartei 1 seat (2009: no seat)
FAMILIE 1 seat (2009: no seat)

The provisional results of the 2014 European Election for the Federation, the 16 Länder and the 402 towns not attached to an administrative district and the rural districts are provided on the website of the Federal Returning Officer.

The Federal Returning Officer expresses his warmest thanks to the more than 630,000 voluntary workers in the electoral boards. Their work has been a significant contribution to the successful conduct of the 2014 European Election and a good service to democracy. Special thanks also go to thousands of workers in the electoral offices of the districts, towns and municipalities, in the administrative agencies and in the Deutsche Post AG postal services who kept the election process running smoothly.

The Federal Electoral Committee will determine and announce the official final result of the 2014 European Election on Friday, 20 June 2014, at a public meeting in the German Bundestag in Berlin, Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus (entrance Adele-Schreiber-Krieger-Str. 1), room 3.101 (Anhörungssaal).
