2019 European Election: 10 days left until the election day in Germany

WIESBADEN – The Federal Returning Officer reports that just 10 days are left until the European Election in Germany on 26 May 2019. This is a good reason for compiling some figures on this 2019 election.

  • 8 municipal elections will take place on the same day as the ninth European Parliament election on 26 May 2019: in Baden-Württemberg, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rheinland-Pfalz, dem Saarland, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt und Thüringen.
  • 16  land returning officers ensure that the European Election is properly conducted in the German Länder.
  • 6 p.m.: end of the poll in Germany.
  • 25 euros of refreshment allowance are paid to poll workers on election day (electoral officers receive 35 euros).
  • 28 EU Member States elect their members of the European Parliament.
  • 35.3 % of the persons entitled to vote in Germany are older than 59 years.
  • 41 parties and other political associations will run in this European Election in Germany.
  • 51.2 % of the persons entitled to vote in Germany are women.
  • 96 members of the European Parliament are elected by Germans.
  • 419 district, town and borough returning officers organise the European Election on the spot.
  • 751 members of the European Parliament will be elected in 2019.
  • 1,380 candidates are standing for election in Germany in the 2019 European Elections.
  • 1979 is the year in which the first direct elections to the European Parliament were held.
  • Roughly 15,000 postal ballot districts were established for the European Election.
  • Roughly 72,000 polling stations will be open to the voters on 26 May from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Roughly 609,000 volunteer poll workers will help at the polling stations and with the postal ballot on election day.
  • 3.9 million citizens of other EU Member States live in Germany and are entitled to vote here.
  • 3.9 million first-time voters may cast their vote in the European Election in Germany.
  • 64.8 million people are eligible to vote in the European Election in Germany.
  • Roughly 418 million people in all EU Member States are entitled to vote in the 2019 European Elections.
  • 512 million is the total number of inhabitants of all Member States of the European Union.
