Election campaign period

The beginning and the end of an election campaign are not laid down by law. The duration of the election campaign period is therefore rather unspecific. Generally, there is a preparation phase, the pre-election period and the "heated" phase of the election campaign (final phase). The parties’ pre-election period starts months before the election, usually when the Federal President fixes the election date (about one year before election day). According to court practice, the "heated" election campaign period begins some six to four weeks before election day.
