Constituency candidate

Constituency candidates stand for election in a constituency to win a seat in the Bundestag directly on the first vote.

A person may only appear as a party candidate on a constituency nomination form if he or she is not a member of another party (membership of a voters’ association or non-membership of a party shall not be prejudicial) and has been elected for this purpose in an assembly of party members convened for the election of a constituency candidate, or in a special or general assembly of party delegates. From the 2025 Bundestag election onwards, admission as a constituency candidate will also be on the precondition that a Land list of the respective party has been admitted in the Land concerned.

Candidates without party affiliation may also run for a constituency seat as independent candidates provided that the candidature is supported by the signatures of a minimum of 200 persons entitled to vote in that specific constituency.

There are no constituency candidates in European elections.
