2019 European Election: 1,380 candidates standing for election

WIESBADEN – In the European election on 26 May 2019, a total of 1,380 candidates are standing for the 96 European Parliament seats allocated to the Federal Republic of Germany. 479 candidates are women (share: 34.7%). This was reported today by Federal Returning Officer Dr. Georg Thiel at a press conference in Berlin.

The Federal Returning Officer called on all citizens to participate in the European election on 26 May 2019. He stressed that the European election is of special importance as it permits citizens to influence political decision-making within the European Union.

Altogether, 41 parties and other political associations will run in the 2019 European Election with lists for all Länder or with lists for individual Länder. The ballot papers will contain 40 nominations for each Land.

More detailed information on the parties and associations admitted and on the candidates and substitute candidates standing for election is provided in the publication “Die Wahlbewerberinnen und Wahlbewerber für die Wahl zum Europäischen Parlament aus der Bundesrepublik Deutschland 2019”. Among others, it lists the names of all candidates and substitute candidates and contains summary tables with information on the proportion of women, the age of the candidates and the occupational groups to which they belong.
